Welcome to Fort Worth, Texas - CUB SCOUT PACK 422!

Cub Scouting means "doing." Everything in Cub Scouting is designed to have the boys doing things. These events may be with their families, Den (boys of the same age or grade) or the whole Pack.

Activities are used to achieve the aims of Scouting—citizenship training, character development, and personal fitness. Many of the activities happen right in the den and pack. The most important are the Den meetings and the monthly Pack meetings.

Apart from the fun and excitement of Cub Scout activities, the Cub Scout Uniform, the Scout Oath and Law, the Cub Scout sign, handshake, motto, and salute all teach good citizenship and contribute to a boy's sense of belonging.

Annual ROCKET LAUNCH at Bear Creek Park - 9/23 at 9:00am - It's a BLAST!

The Keller Fire Department will be attending as well. They are always happy to talk to the kids and let them check out the truck. Please make sure your Scout thanks them for coming out to our event.

Also, you are welcome to invite friends to come watch the event and certainly invite friends to join Cub Scouts!

Guidelines:

Bring a SAFE rocket to the event. We recommend the pre-designed kits by Estes available at Hobby Lobby. Properly assembled (ROCKET MUST BE ASSEMBLED/BUILT PRIOR TO THE EVENT), these tend to be very stable in flight. Some kits are pre-assembled or RTF (Ready to fly); others will indicate a level of difficulty relative to assembly. Rockets that exhibit erratic flight characteristics during launching will be excluded from additional launches for the safety of the Scouts and park. Also, please do not purchase anything that requires larger than an Estes standard D-size engine (No composite™ motors allowed). Please see below for engine recommendations as well. Scouts will need to purchase and build the rocket kit and also purchase engines and recovery wadding (if it is provided with the rocket). The engines typically come with igniters and igniter holders (little plastic screws). Launching pad and launcher not needed - we have our own Pack 10 station launch pad and launchers. You just need to bring your rocket and appropriate engine (igniter, plastic screw, and wadding)

Cut a hole in center of parachutes at least 2" to start, depending on weight and size of rocket. We hope for low winds and favorable weather on the day of the event; however even with relatively low winds, rockets can drift significantly during the parachute descent - the hole in the center of the chute will reduce this drifting and help to ensure you can retrieve your rocket for multiple launches.

Obey the safety instructions of the "launch crew" - maintaining a safe distance from the launch pad, and launching only when directed to so do. For those unfamiliar with our launching system, we have a 10 position launch system, with individual push buttons for each scout to launch their rocket when directed by those running the launch pad. Safety switches are also used to remove power from launch push buttons during the launch set-up. Our kids' safety is our first priority.

Bring your folding chairs or picnic blankets and coolers and sit back and enjoy the show!!!

Notes:

Our goal is for each scout to be able to launch their rocket multiple times. Scouts may bring more than one rocket for launching if they desire. Rockets assembled by family members/siblings of the Scout are also welcome. Scouts launch first by rank, then siblings.

Rocket kits can be purchased at Hobby Lobby and Michaels. Below is a link to Hobby Lobby where you can print a 40% off coupon. This will give you a discount toward the purchase of rockets or engines, etc): http://www.hobbylobby.com/ However, you can also purchase them from Estes™ website (http://www.estesrockets.com), but make sure it will ship to get here on time. And, of course, there's always Amazon for faster shipping.

We also encourage scouts to purchase at least two or three engines for use at the event (engine packages typically include igniters and igniter holders) as well as recovery wadding, which is flame retardant. You must use the wadding to help prevent the engine from catching the parachute on fire. There will be spare wadding at the event to ensure this is addressed. The model rocket instructions should show you how to install the wadding and engine in the rocket, and install the igniter and its holder at the time of the launch.

PLEASE CHECK THE REQUIRED ENGINE SIZES FOR THE SPECIFIC KIT YOU ARE PURCHASING. THIS WILL BE LISTED ON THE FRONT OF THE KIT. WE HIGHLY RECOMMEND YOU PURCHASE THE SMALLER ENGINES INDICATED ON THE KIT IN ORDER TO LIMIT THE HEIGHTS REACHED BY THE ROCKETS, thereby reducing the amount of drift to hopefully keep the rockets within the boundaries of the park and out of the water. This also helps to ensure your son gets to retrieve his rocket for multiple launches. We do not recommend two-stage rockets for this same reason.

  1. June 23rd @1pm - Keller Pointe - Come swim with the Pack - there is no RSVP.  Just tell them you are with the Cub Scout party when you get there, so they can log your name, and the Pack will pay.

CROSSOVER WAS A HUGE SUCCESS - NOW IT'S TIME TO PLAN FOR NEXT YEAR!

Crossover was great!  So proud to be part of this group of great boys and dads - tremendous!

With Crossover behind us, it is now time to plan for next year.  Our annual Planning Meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, 5/16/17, at 6:00pm at WSES - Science room #307, NOT in the cafeteria (the Kindergarten has a musical on the same night I believe).  

Our primary focus will be on planning the next year's activities, including budget, for our Cub Scout Pack, including but not limited to Summer time events (Tamara Maya and Theresa Meier coordinating - thank you Tamara); Campouts (Angie Septer coordinating - thank you Angie); Rocket Launch (Jill Pezzuto coordinating - thank you Jill); Pinewood (Brandon Yancey coordinating - thank you Brandon), and B&G (we still need coordinators for B&G).

This is your opportunity to provide input on what you would like our Pack to be doing in the coming year.  Also, just an FYI for our newer members, the Dens don't typically meet during the Summer time.  Typically, just the Pack meets about once per month to achieve the Summertime Pack Award, but that's about it.  That doesn't mean your Den is not allowed to meet, just that there are no requirements that you have to work on until September, i.e. the Den meetings typically follow the school year.

This meeting is for parents only, so if you must bring your kids, please make sure they have something to do to keep them occupied and not disturb our meeting, so we can get the work done and get out ASAP.  We do not want kids running the halls because the school has other meetings/events on that same night. 

On a very positive note, Camp Card sales were a huge success with total sales of $7,910 (791 cards) sold +$107 donations = $4,062 placed into the Scout Accounts of 31 boys (vs. $2,330 last year for 18 boys) for use at day camp, pack dues, Scout store stuff, etc., etc.  If you're not sure if something would be covered by this, just email your question to me and/or Kelly Morgan.  To use your Scout Account, just submit your receipt with reimbursement form attached to Kelly Morgan, Treasurer, for reimbursement.  When we collect dues in September, you will just indicate at that Pack meeting that you want to apply your son's Scout Account money to pay his dues.  To be clear, the Camp Card sales money goes to the individual Scout, i.e. the Pack does not get any of that money.  The Pack money comes from dues payments and Popcorn sales.

Our annual rank advancement ceremony (Crossover) is May 7th from 4pm – 6pm at Keller’s Bear Creek Park at the bridge near the pavilion.   
Bring your Scout in his Class A uniform, your camera, chairs, and tissues. 
There will also be a cake reception following the event at the adjacent pavilion.

  • Volunteers currently needed as Coordinator/Planner for the following events:  Summertime events (June, July, and August) - provide assistance to Tamara Maya (Thank you Tamara for stepping up to help out!), Rocket Launch (September), Pinewood (January), and Blue & Gold (February).  So, please email me with the event that you would like to work on ASAP - No Den Leaders - We have a lot of parents in this Pack, and we need your help to make our Pack events fun and successful for our boys.  Many hands make light work, so please lend a hand.

    THE LATEST FOR PACK 422!

    1.       Our Next Pack meeting is a STEM EVENT is Tuesday, March 21, 2017, at 6:30pm at WSES Cafeteria, but the STEM stations will be run by staff from the Longhorn Activity Center.   I will have Camp Cards to hand out at that time to parents.  If you want them sooner, just email me to pick them up before Wednesday, 3/8/17.  Otherwise, you’ll have to wait until the 3/21 Pack meeting, due to Spring Break.
     
    2.       Camp Cards are an easy way for your Scout to earn money and pay his own way – each card is sold for $10, and your son gets $5 of that back in his Scout Account (that’s a 50% return on the sale – best fundraiser out there that directly benefits your Scout) to be used for Pack membership dues in September, Scout camp gear, Scout Store stuff, or Day Camp this Summer.  There are upcoming Show-n-Sell opportunities to sell the cards in front of Tom Thumb and Albertson’s (making it a much easier sell because you are right there with the card that is immediately worth $10 off of a $100 purchase, so if they were going to spend $100 anyway, the card is basically free to the customer).  To sign up for show-n-sells, go to: http://signup.com/go/UNxGa3, review the options listed and choose the spot(s) you like, and you will NOT need to register an account or keep a password on SignUp.com.
    3.       Camping:  Our next Campout is at Dinosaur Valley State Pack in Glen Rose, TX, from April 21st – 23rd – please, please register for this campout, so we make sure we have enough sites and food for Saturday night, at: http://www.cubpack422.com/node/3045 or just go to the Calendar on the www.Cubpack422.com website and click on the event date.
     
    4.       Crossover:  Our annual rank advancement ceremony (Crossover) is planned for May 7th from 4pm – 6pm at Keller’s Bear Creek Park at the bridge near the pavilion.   Bring your camera, chairs, and tissues.  Please, please make sure to get your son’s rank advancement requirements entered into Scoutbook.com by May 1st, and hopefully sooner than that, to ensure he receives his rank advancement at Crossover.  If you have any questions in that regard, please feel free to email/contact your Den Leader or me ASAP.
